English Branch
Julius Joseph Rohu (1810-1865) was one of five children of Bonaventure Marie Rohu, who had been taken to England after the defeat of the French Royalists at Quiberon in 1795. Following their father's death, Julius Joseph and John Vincent, together with their sisters were entered at the Greenwich Asylum, an educational institution for military orphans. The two boys subsequently graduated into the Royal Navy. Julius Joseph married Elizabeth Smith, from Plymouth, in 1831 and they had two children, Emma (Betsie) and Jane Susan.
Betsie married William Miller in 1852 and had twelve children. A daughter, Emma Miller, married her second cousin Alfred Rohu in 1892. Jane Susan married John James Simmons in 1872 and they had four children.
Julius died in 1865, and it appears that Elizabeth had a hard life. She is described as a 'charwoman' in the 1871 census, and in the workhouse in 1881. She died in the workhouse aged 70. It seems she died alone, which is quite sad, as she had a large family living close by.
